Launching of the Latin American and Caribbean Network of National Contact Points

In Panama on 1, 2 and 3 February of 2017 the "CAPACITY BUILDING WORKSHOP FOR NATIONAL CONTACT POINTS FOR HORIZON 2020: Launch of the Network of National Contact Points for Latin America and the Caribbean" was held. It was a space for dialogue and joint work between the countries of CELAC and the European Union to strengthen and give sustainability to the Network of National Contact Points of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC Network NCP) for the Horizon 2020 Program, with the purpose to generate more opportunities for researchers and companies in the region so that they can make use of the Program. Within this framework, the RED is being created, which will be actively promoted by the MEC (Uruguay) through the National Contact Point, Mr. Claudia Romano; and the DLR (Germany) through Lic. Annneken Reise.

More than 180 participants were informed about the opportunities for research, technology and innovation for third countries within the Horizon 2020 Program. Claudia Guerrero, as NCP and organizer of the local event, had a very important role to achieve an active participation of Panamanian specialists as well as for the development of the event.

Successful Liaison Offices were presented in Latin America and Europe such as DLR in Germany, MINCyT in Argentina and MEC-CUBIST in Uruguay. There were also sessions of evaluation and monitoring of the impact of the Network LAC NCP.

Jesús Rojo, from Madrid + D, provided detailed information on mobility of researchers through the Marie S-Curie Actions. A delegate from the IDEALIST NETWORK, Darwin Muñoz, participated in the study, analyzing the synergies and potentialities between the two networks. Euraxes, was also present, informing about the activities carried out in the region.

In this context, a Letter of Interest was also signed between RED CLARA, which will facilitate the dissemination of opportunities, calls, training and info days, using the existing infrastructure, this point is extremely important for the continuity and support for the work of national contact points and researchers in the region.

The event concluded with recommendations by the Deputy Minister of Science and Technology in El Salvador, Ms. Erlinda Handal for the next JIRI SOM to be held in Brussels on 14 and 15 March 2017.

National Secretariat of Science and Technology of Guatemala with the support of the ALCUE NET Project, led by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation (MINCyT). Argentina, with support from DLR in Germany and the Ministry of Education and Culture in Uruguay.

The main objective of this event was to provide information and training to promote future Guatemalan participation in the Horizon 2020 Program.

The event was attended by more than 100 researchers from different Guatemalan universities.

The inauguration was attended by the National Secretary of Science and Technology of Guatemala, Mr. Oscar Manuel Cóbar, and the representative of the European Union in Guatemala, Mr. Stefano Gatto.

The training, which included expository activities, as well as practical work, was in charge of Ms. Claudia Romano, MEC and Lic. Jesús Rojo, from Madrid + D.

In addition, a working session was held with the newly appointed National Contact Points, with the aim of publicizing the main tasks that, according to the European Commission indicates, they should have, as well as supporting their first steps.
